ALS from David Hall of the 139th Illinois Infantry, Company G. Letter is incomplete and undated, though signed by Hall. Most likely written during the summer of 1864, when the regiment served garrison duty at Cairo. Excerpt: ''…Norman has been rather unwell…I think that the most of this sickness arises from change of air food & water…I was feeling worse than I have any day since I left Peoria. I had a bad diarhea, but got excused from drill…One great reason for so much sickness arises from the excessively warm weather…day after day the hot sun has poured down its scorching rays…from … past 4 in the morning to nearly eight at night one can do nothing but sweat and groan and groan and sweat…While I sit here writing a Locomotion…stands steaming and blowing. Now with a snort and ringing of bells it is gone…On the river side of the Levee the 49th Ill have stopped and the 122nd…leave for Memphis probably to reinforce Gen. Sherman. I feel sorry that they have to leave their comfortable locations, quarters, offices and Ladies, but as we shall try to fill their places I for one shall try to put up with it…Tomorrow, 33 deserters will start from this place for Louisvill…'' Hall mustered into Company G on 1 June 1864 and mustered out on 28 October 1864 at Peoria, Illinois. A 100-day regiment, the 139th Infantry passed its three month term serving garrison duty in Cairo. When its term expired, the regiment stayed on an additional two months to participate in defeating Price's Raid of Missouri. Ink letter measures 8'' x 10'' and runs 2pp. Single page invitation measures 4.5'' x 7''. Letter shows mild toning and edgewear, otherwise excellent condition.
