BACK TO THE FUTURE: THE RIDE (1991-2007) - Douglas Trumbull Collection: Collection of 210 Photos with Transparencies and Negatives - A collection of 210 photos, transparencies, and negatives from behind-the-scenes and the opening day of Back to the Future: The Ride at Universal Orlando theme park. Based on the Back to the Future film series, the ride serves as a mini-sequel to Back to the Future Part III.

This lot comes from the collection of special photographic effects artist Douglas Trumbull. It consists of 25 high-gloss printed photo stills of behind-the-scenes of the ride adhered to foam boards labeled on the backing; 184 photos from opening day depicting the environment, attendees, actors, and fireworks with 27 accompanying negative film strips; one loose photo; 76 loose transparencies of varying sizes; 48 transparencies on four sheets; one sheet of four transparencies with one loose one; 11 sheets of photo negatives; two magazines featuring articles of the ride at Universal Studios Florida, and one Berkshire RideFilm booklet. This lot exhibits a notable loss of adhesion on the corners of the photo boards, adhesive residue from tape placements, missing pages from the Cinefex magazine, stickiness between photos, and wear on the magazine spines. Dimensions: (largest) 20" x 16" x 0.25" (51 cm x 40.75 cm x 0.75 cm)Visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull was born in Los Angeles in 1942. After abandoning architecture for technical drawing and cartooning, his talent for photorealism soon earned him work at Graphic Films, an esteemed Hollywood studio for which he designed groundbreaking cosmic effects for the 1964 New York World's Fair. After seeing Trumbull's work, director Stanley Kubrick hired him to create animations and VFX shots - including the iconic Star Gate sequence - for what would become his seminal masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. From that film's success, Trumbull became one of the industry's most trusted photographic effects experts, designing and producing legendary screen moments in such sci-fi landmarks as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Blade Runner, all three of which earned him Academy Award& reg; nominations. In addition to directing the cult classics Silent Running and Brainstorm, Trumbull later received a Scientific and Engineering Award for his high-speed photography process Showscan in 1993, one of two specialty awards given to him by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences before his death in 2022. 60 years since he first made his mark on global cinema, Propstore today celebrates Douglas Trumbull by presenting a selection of rare memorabilia from his personal collection to the public.
