Letter from Quincy A. Brown of the 12th Ohio Infantry to his brother. Accompanied by cover. Written in ink and datelined ''Camp Cleveland / Nov. 20th 1863,'' letter reads in part: ''…I have been acting as orderly Sgt…The doctor gave me some salts to take and I got some cold water and wet my handkerchief and put it on my forehead, layed down in my bunk and grunted it through. The next day I had another attack of the headache. I've had a bad cough ever since. I am taking cough drops…We left Camp Dennison in the morning of the 11th arrived here in the evening. We found it pretty sloppy between here and Cleveland. I have drawn my uniform with the exception of my pants and Cavalry jacket. We have not been mustered into the regiment yet, we expect to be soon. We are Cavalry, armed with muskets. We have plenty of swearing and card playing here and old smoke pipes for a regiment of old women…We expect to move our quarters this evening. I had the honor of shaking the paw of old Johnny Brough. He came to Cleveland on the same train we came on. Saw Lake Erie and also had the honor of seeing General Rosecrans. Yesterday evening he came out to visit the hospital…I am now Commissary Sergeant, don't know whether for good or not…'' Quincy Brown mustered into the 12th Ohio Infantry on 9 November 1863 and was promoted to Sergeant before being transferred to the 9th Ohio Cavalry, Company L. He was discharged for disability on 12 June 1865. During his enlistment Brown saw action at Waynesboro, Aiken, Monroe's Cross-Roads, Averasboro and Bentonville. Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 3pp. Toning, soiling at creases and dampstained edges, otherwise excellent condition.
