4pp. letter from Major Benjamin F. Cook of the 12th Massachusetts Infantry, Company K. Written in ink and datelined ''Camp of 12 Mass Vol Near Sharpsburg, MD Oct 6th,'' letter was composed just three weeks after the regiment fought in the 17 September Battle of Antietam. Excerpt: ''…Dear Wife…Lieut. Clark is in command of my company as I am still acting as Field Officer…I have not seen any late Gloucester papers…The Army is laying still…There is a rumor that the Rebels are planting Batteries opposite us on the other side of the Potomac. If so I think it is only to use then retreat for they will not dare to cross into Maryland again. I wish I could come Home for a short time. I have seen enough of military for me…Kiss Kate and Gennie for Father. I am your Husband…'' Benjamin Cook mustered into Company K on 26 June 1861 as a First Lieutenant and mustered out as a Lieutenant Colonel on 8 July 1864 at Boston, Massachusetts. The regiment saw action at Cedar Mountain, Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and the Siege of Petersburg. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Separation at fold and bite at top corner of last page. Near fine condition.
