4pp. letter from Samuel J. Stoffer of the 12th Indiana Cavalry, Company H, to his wife. Accompanied by cover. Datelined ''February the 26th 1864 / Camp Mitchel Kendallville / Indiana,'' letter reads in part: ''…I got my pass from lieutenant Fields and I did not ask him for any but Fields and also the Captain - both said that they guessed that I was just like them or Anybody else that I would like to sleep with my wife as they did…I told them…but I did not know how they did sleep with their women. Next I told you that I did not believe that I could get a furlough to go without, but I believe now that I coud have got one. They seem to think more of me than they did a while ago, at least it seems like it. Because they talk to me more than they did. Next I will tell you that I looked for a letter from you this evening for the first time since we are here…the rest of the boys get letters from home…try and serve the lord Right…'' Stoffer mustered into Company H on 12 January 1864 and mustered out on 12 June 1865. The 12th Indiana was primarily stationed at Huntsville, where Stoffer participated in its defense during the attack by General Forrest. Ink letter measures 4.5'' x 7''. Some soiling, otherwise near fine condition.
