(12TH MISSISSIPPI ARCHIVE)
An interesting grouping of eight documents, all pertaining to the outfitting of the Claiborne Guards, which comprised H Company of the 12th Mississippi Infantry. Mustered in in May of 1861, the 12th, starting with an effective strength of 1013 men, saw action in almost every major engagement in the Eastern Theater, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. They finally surrendered with just 54 men at Appomattox. The documents, all written in 1861, vary in size, with the largest being 8”x 7”, and the smallest 6”x 4”. Six of the Documents are written to various merchants in Mississippi, paying them for various necessary articles for outfitting the unit, including uniforms, blankets, shoes, and foot lockers, with the remaining two being for room and board and drawing the unit’s pay. On the verso of one of the documents is a rare 5 line war date endorsement of then Captain HENRY HUGHES, who was briefly the Colonel commanding the unit, dying of disease in 1862. Some documents bear very light soiling, usual fold, otherwise in very good condition. Eight pieces.
