Letter from First Sergeant John M. Ebersole of the 126th Ohio Infantry, Company F. Accompanied by cover. Written in ink and datelined ''U.S.A. Hospital / Frederick, Maryland / November 19 /64,'' letter reads in part: ''…This is a fine day considering the time of the year. I would rather see it rain or snow than see so fine weather. as shure as there comes a fine day or night it makes me think of home and its charms…reminds me of mother when she would see any thing strong or prety in the sky she would call Father or me to see it pap would say oh go long I see it…and go on with what ever he chanced to be at. I dont like the idea of going so far from Malvern…Shaw what is the use of such talk the rebs say there will be war for 4 years more so they can sell out a dozen times be fore I get home if this be the case if the rebs can cary the war on 4 years longer we can I am shure. so let the wide world say as it will Il be gay and hapy still. you speak of geting a litter from Hasher…he is a prety fine fellow yet very wild and foolish I suppose he will be more so since he is in the army of his country…Old Cap Weyand has resigned oh good. I do think he was a little the meanest man I know and the army did not suit him…He will make a beter Carrollton loafer than any thing else…'' The 126th Ohio saw its first action in a heated skirmish at Martinsburg in the summer of 1863. The regiment went on to fight in the Battle of Bristoe Station and the subsequent skirmishing at Centerville, and in every engagement of the Richmond Campaign. John M. Ebersole mustered into Company F on 4 September 1862 and mustered out as a First Sergeant on 25 June 1865. Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 3pp. Some separation at folds, otherwise near fine condition.
