Datelined ''Martinsburg Virginia April 21 [1865],'' letter reads in part: ''…Dear Sister Lill…When last I wrote we were sorjourning at Harpers Ferry, a place of considerable note in military operations but our sojourn their was of short duration. We left on Sunday morning at 8 for this place…The distance is 20 miles…As we got on and rode up here the Major was quite angry and told some of the boys it would be the dearest ride we ever had. We got up here in the afternoon about 3 oclock The Regt got in the next day at 10. The old Maj. was pleased…4 companies have gone out on the Rail Road to guard. Company R are at Cherry Rows 15 miles from here. They are in hopes they will stay their some time…this Civil War is not over. Our Brass Band are getting along finely. They have a room by themselves and practice all the time. The 34th have a splendid Brass Band. The Leader is teaching our boys…from your Brother / Farmer George Williams 123d O.V.I. George Williams mustered in 24 February 1865 at age 18 and mustered out 12 June 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio. Letter, written in ink, measures 5'' x 8''. Fine condition.
