Around 15 plates per volume, mostly portraits of historical figures, but also views and significant buildings. Mostly steel engravings, some copper engravings, photogravures, and lithographs. 8vo. Half red leather and beige cloth, teg, marbled eps. Placed in is a handwritten, signed letter by H. C. Mason to ?Mr. H. L. Rice/ Boston Mass? I have shipped you? your set of Trevelyan. I looked the set over in the bindery, and consider it the best set of books I ever illustrated? My first object was completeness: that is to include a portrait of everyone prominently mentioned. In this I was successful. My first choice of course were portraits from steel or copper engraved plates. When I got the best portrait of this kind I could secure, I turned wood engravings for some not otherwise obtainable, and when this source was exhausted I photo etched the others. In some cases you will find a steel portrait and in another place a photoengraving. The reason for this is that I didn?t want too many pages to intervene without an illustration. I have given Trevelyan my constant thought for several months, and there is some good reason for every print and for the position it occupies... I trust you will find the set satisfactory/ yours truly/ H. C. Mason.? Mason?s letterhead, [2]pp, toning to p[2] and near edges of p[1], H. C. Mason's ALS very good.
