Two Civil War soldier letters, totaling eight pages, by Duncan Robert McAllister of the 10th Massachusetts Infantry concerning Fredericksburg, an explosion at Yorktown and Confederate cavalry raiders. First letter dated 14 May 1863 reads in part, ''…I have seen many a brave soldier fall since I last saw you…the men each side of me fell dead in battle…I was not touched. Our loss is heavy, in our brigade in cild and wounded is 500 men and in our regiment is 88…one forth of the regiment…all this is nothing compared with us haven to retreat back which was caused by the Eleventh Corps from Pennsylvania carled dogs like tha ware…if they had stood their ground this war would be about a end…we are about to move again and those cordle dogs will take the front and will have to fight or die for Sedgwick's Corps…saved the whole…army in the last move…[they] suffered in stormen the heights of Fredgburg [Fredericksburg] which was a soriful sight for me to be hold…'' Second letter datelined Gloucester Point, Virginia, 18 December 1863 reads in part, ''…a fire broke out in the cook house attached to the general hospital in Yorktown…it spread…into of the magazines and such an explosion…took place was a site to be hold. Shot and shell…were bursting in the air. Our camp…on the opposite side of the river we had a splendid view of the fire…the casualties were several badly wounded…on Thursday…a vidette came into camp reporting the enemy in site of our picket. Our regt was out on inspection…and ordered to get ready to fall in line…about 150 rebel cavalry came down with the intention of capturing our teams that go out after wood…but they did not succeed in capturing any…'' Very good condition.
