THE KING AND I (1956) - "Small House of Uncle Thomas" Spear - A "Small House of Uncle Thomas" spear from Walter Lang's The King and I. Dancers wielded decorative spears in the Simon Legree (Marion Jim) section of "Small House of Uncle Thomas," a ballet staging of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin performed for Western guests of King Mongkut of Siam (Yul Brynner).

This spear is constructed from bamboo with a gilded wooden tip hand-painted to resemble gold, inset at its decorative base with faux red gemstones, and wrapped with a dyed red synthetic hair tuft. The bamboo is finished with a dark brown lacquer. The spear's tip exhibits splitting, revealing the wood inside, and the brown and gold-color finishes are both flaking from age. Dimensions: 49.5" x 4" x 4" (126 cm x 10.25 cm x 10.25 cm)

Additional Provenance: Letter of Authenticity from legendary choreographer Jerome Robbins, who choreographed the original Broadway production of The King and I as well as staging the musical and dance numbers for the film adaptation.

Estimate: $1,500 - 3,000
