(1860s) William Idler, M-Pa-222, Philadelphia, PA, MS64 NGC. Nickel, 20mm. This merchant token promotes William Idler as a "Dealer in Coins, Minerals &c." from his Philadelphia location. Idler is famous--or infamous--in numismatic circles for obtaining several examples of the Class III 1804 dollars from the Mint, which he sold for $75 each. The Mint subsequently recovered most of the examples, but Idler produced electrotypes from a piece that he retained. Idler was the father-in-law of Captain John R. Haseltine, another early American numismatist. This piece has lovely light-gray semiprooflike fields that are distraction-free. Rulau's fourth edition lists an MS60 value of $75. What this MS64 piece will bring, before a numismatically inclined audience, is anyone's guess.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
