1837 S.S.B., Low-139, HT-464, R.6, AU55 NGC. Brass, 2.5 gms, 19.6mm. This is the finest known of this elusive R.6 maverick Hard Times-era token. (Maverick tokens are those unattributed--so far--as to time, place, occupation/industry, and other pertinent details.) The Rulau reference notes, "It has been suggested, without evidence, that S.S.B. could stand for 'Scovill's Superfine Buttons.' The die work and size seem to clearly indicate some connection with the button-making industry." The date 1837 is quite bold on this example, with a large 8 and the 7 with a prominent cross-stroke. The brass planchet is well-struck and problem-free, and all details are well brought up, even at the interesting, decorative feathered-floral peripheries and in the unusual, intentionally textured background on each side that calls to mind the surface of a modern thimble.
The Rulau fourth edition provides a value of $2,500 in XF and $3,500 in Uncirculated. A VF example of this evanescent token in the Zeddies Brand sale (Bowers & Merena, 1990) brought $2,200. This example is finer by at least 20 points. Bidding should be fierce.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
