1837 R.L. Baker, Low-108, HT-430, R.7, Charleston, SC, AU55 NGC. Ex: John J. Ford Collection. German Silver. 19mm. South Carolina tokens from the 1830s are rare and seldom encountered in the marketplace. This example is one of only seven pieces of HT-430 that are known to be in "public hands," according to Rulau. This type of token was "Good For 1 Glass" of soda water at the R.L. Baker establishment in Charleston. This is a pleasant example of this token, with steel-gray surfaces and light toning. Previously, an AU specimen brought $3,630 in a 1989 Gil Steinberg sale, and in October 2000 a VF example sold for $4,620 at a PCAC Sale (lot 38). The Rulau fourth edition (page 195) provides a value in AU of $6,250.Ex John J. Ford Collection (Stack's, 6/2004), lot 191.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
