(1833-5) P Evens, HT-376A, R.7, Cincinnati, OH, AU50 NGC. Gilt copper, 23.8mm. The May 1917 issue of The Numismatist (page 198) has a nice article written by Waldo C. Moore on Platt Evens, Sr., who was a "men's mercer and tailor." Moore's article places the tokens of Evens--who came to Cincinnati from New York about 1815--to the Hard Times era. The article says that "... the most prominent store in the town for many years was that of Platt Evens." Through his attractive and well-outfitted storefront, Evens achieved fame even overseas, and both General Lafayette and President Zachary Taylor were among his clientele.
The AU gilt-copper piece at hand identifies Evens as a "draper and tailor," provides his Cincinnati address (149 Main St.), and maintains that Evens "Keeps on Hand in His Line a Choice Selection of Fine Goods." This is a choice, even, problem-free piece with some of the copper showing underneath the gilt surfaces. The Rulau fourth edition catalog value (page 183 is $1,000 in VF and $2,500 in Uncirculated. Expect strong bidding when this piece crosses the auction block.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
