10-gauge side-by-side shotgun, engraved “Majors, Russel & Co.” on each lock. Barrel is hand-engraved London fine-twist. No British proofs. Approx. 48” overall, 31-1/2” barrels of 10ga, heavy construction with large reinforcing rib. The gun shows two barrel keys in German silver trim with engraved iron triggerguard and good quality checkered walnut stock. The gun shows a brown patina finish with traces of damascening, the rib shows old resoldering and repining at the breech. The stock has been lightly refinished and is generally good overall. The locks are working, and original to the period brass-tipped ramrod is included. The firm of Russel, Majors, and Waddell were freighters, stagecoach operators, and originators of the Pony Express. This gun appears American and this is the only known original marked specimen for Majors, Russell & Co. as the firm was only in business for two years and this marking is absolutely engraved at the time of the gun’s manufacture. Mr. Orbelo confirmed the Huntington Library and Wells Fargo museum curator that this is the only known marked specimen from this early stagecoach company, and an awesome self-defense weapon as it could be loaded with a
