1 1/4 Charles Evans Hughes 1916 Button Tough, Striking Red, White, and Blue 1 1/4 Charles Evans Hu
Tough, Striking Red, White, and Blue 1 1/4" Charles Evans Hughes Button From 1916. Hughes was favored to win the 1916 election over incumbent Woodrow Wilson and, like Thomas Dewey in 1948, went to bed believing himself to be the president-elect. Like in 1948, many newspapers proclaimed him the winner. But in the morning hours, the final vote count gave California and the election to Wilson. As a general rule, Republican campaign organizations historically have had more money to spend on things like campaign buttons, and Hughes didn't suffer by being a perceived likely loser. So it is quite odd that, except for a handful of common, nationally distributed designs, Hughes buttons are quite rare. This is especially so in 1 1/4" or larger size. Even the most available 1 1/4" Hughes pin still fetches over $100. The colorful design and rarity make this one particularly desirable.
