Rome, c. 50 BC-150 AD.</B> The irregular lump of fine-grain reddish clay, showing deeply impressed finger prints, and on the back, the texture of papyrus sheet. Impressed motif from a very stylish &#34;symbol&#34; seal with Dionysian theme -- a youthful maenad face and a bearded satyr face comprising two elements of a profile elephant head. Cf. Henig, <I>Engraved Gems from Gadara</I>, no. 309 &#40;but having three faces&#41;. Item intact.
