c1800-A large leather boot made of a three piece pattern. The tall "upper" made of heavy leather was designed to protect the lower leg up to the knee. The extended heel prevented the foot from slipping through the stirrup while on horseback. The height of the heel and the severe rake forward to the toe accommodated the large six-inch spur rowels popular during the time, and kept them from striking the ground. The extreme heel also extended the height of the user, serving as an indicator of power and status. Boots such as this were non-designated, meaning that they were not made for the left or right foot, but wearing them would eventually shape it to the necessary angle for eventual fit and comfort. The boot measures 23" to the highest portion of the upper leather, and the sole is 11" long. The heel bears a metal tap with 3 nails, meant to prolong to life of the boot`s use. The heel also bears remnants of red and green thread, which was likely a decorative element. Wire detailing is also visible on the heel. This boot seems to have been used as a display item at some point, as it smells very heavily of potpourri. HKA#64879
