A pair of Grinch facial appliances, custom-made by legendary makeup artist Rick Baker and his award-winning team for Jim Carrey in his unforgettable role as the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Universal Pictures, 2000).
These extraordinary production pieces consist of the Grinch’s signature foam latex muzzle and forehead, both expertly crafted and resting on clear plastic life casts of Jim Carrey’s face and head. The molds are marked “GRINCH” and “GR”, serving as direct production identifiers from Baker’s Cinovation Studios. Each appliance captures the detailed wrinkles, folds, and exaggerated features that defined Carrey’s expressive transformation into Dr. Seuss’s iconic misanthrope.
Rick Baker’s work on The Grinch remains one of the most celebrated achievements in cinematic makeup design. The process of transforming Carrey into the Grinch required more than eight hours of application daily, combining foam latex appliances, intricate coloring, and expressive flexibility that allowed Carrey’s performance to shine through layers of prosthetics. The film’s makeup team ultimately earned the Academy Award® for Best Makeup for their remarkable artistry.
This museum-worthy set represents the pinnacle of practical effects craftsmanship, each piece an essential component in bringing one of the most recognizable Christmas characters in film history to life.
