ALS signed “George S. Patton, Jr.,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.75 x 7, [February 1914], Mounted Service School letterhead, no date. Letter to his mother, with spelling and punctuation retained. In full: “I have just read in the journal that poor Curtis with whom I roomed at V.M.I. was drowned in the collision on the Virginia coast it is truly too bad he was a fine fellow. Beatrice is becoming a great rider Friday she went to the riding hall and did some jumping the jumps were not high but she did well. Sunday I took my military saddle and we went for a ride we took a mess kit and some bacon and coffee and potatoes and cooked them in a cañon we did not get a great deal to eat but had a fine time. I got a great fright to day. I had Mezzer and Mountain Rose and Wooltex down at the jumping pen exercising. I had the first two jumping and Wooltex tied out sick he got frightened and broke away and tried to reduce the worlds record for getting back to the stable he had to go around two corners on a stone road and I felt sure he would fall and break a leg each of his are worth $500.00 so I was certainly scared. Fortunately however he did not fall and was not hurt at all. It was very fortunate. I am going soon hunting in a few moments this is the second time I have gone I hope we get some thing last time we got two opossoms [sic] but they are not much fun. We are all well.” In fine condition, with bisecting vertical mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
