Distinguished Union general (1815–1872) best known for leading his troops to a commanding victory over Lee’s Confederates at Gettysburg in one of the pivotal battles of the Civil War. Outstanding original three-quarter-length carte-de-visite photo of a gloved Meade in uniform, hat in hand, 2.5 x 4, boldly signed in ink on the mount, “Geo. G. Meade.” The reverse bears the backstamp of F. Gutekunst, Philadelphia, and a two-cent revenue stamp with a war-dated cancellation of November 23, 1864. Tiny nick to bottom of image and a bit of light wrinkling, otherwise fine, bright condition.

Gutekunst was one of Philadelphia’s most renowned photographers. His high standards led to a variety of artistically rendered creations by the relatively new medium known as photography. Countless politicians, business leaders, and military officers sought Gutekunst for a private sitting, including Meade, who was residing in Philadelphia at the time. Meade had recently been promoted to major general at the time this image was taken in recognition of his faithful service to General Grant for trapping Lee at Petersburg. Gutekunst successfully captured the fierce determination and unwavering loyalty exuded by Meade during a pivotal point in the Civil War—qualities that were admired by his superior, Grant.
