Large clip-point Bowie Knife marked, THOS IBBOTSON & CO., MAKERS SHEFFIELD, circa 1847. The 12” long blade, 1 9/16” wide and sharp false edge along the clipped-point, shows most of its original polish with small patches of minor pitting and discoloration. The horn scale handle is mounted with die-stamped German silver pommel scales and crossguard in floral designs. The knife is 17” overall. The Thomas Ibbotson Company was located on 81 Charles Street, Sheffield, England and made fine Bowie knives for American use. The Sheffield directories show that it was in business from 1847-1863. The original gold-stamped, dark blue leather veneer scabbard, mounted with a German silver throat and tip, is very good with slight losses and minor scratches from normal carry and use.
