Jack Butler Yeats RHAJohn Hamilton Reynolds, The Fancy, With a Prefatory Memoir and Notes by John Masefield and Thirteen Illustrations by Jack B. Yeats Elkin Mathews, London, [1905]. First edition, first issue. The Fancy was a play written by one of Yeats and Masefield's heroes, the poet and close friend of Keats, John Hamilton Reynolds, who wrote under the pseudonym of Peter Corcoran (who in turn was an eighteenth century pugilist of moderate fame). Masefield supplied a 28 page introduction, after which follows a facsimile of the title page from the original 1820 edition of The Fancy opposite Yeats' frontispiece portrait of Reynolds / Corcoran, then Masefield's 22 page preface, then twelve of Reynold's plays and poems with Yeats' line illustrations amongst the text, and finally a glossary of some of Reynolds' more archaic expressions. Bound in red cloth with white titles stamped on spine and upper board - most copies from the first edition were issued in wrappers; hardbound copies are rarely seen.
