Buffalo were hunted to near extinction by non-natives for their hides, tongues and bones.
As the population of the Buffalo declined, so did the population and quality of life of the Native People.

The Buffalo is considered sacred and a religious symbol to the Native People.
It was a food source and was also used for creating shelters, shields, weapons and clothing.

“Buffalo Nations” depicts the oneness of the Buffalo and Native People of North America, slaughtered and confined by the new civilized settlers.

The highlighted wood represents the continuing struggle of the Nations to overcome the past.

The highlighted wood was hand scraped, sanded, and finished with turpentine and bees wax, then burnished with a deer antler, a method derived from the Makah Indian Tribe of the Pacific Northwest. The wagon wheel came to me with the red paint still intact under the peeling white paint. I found the "Buffalo skull" root about eight years before it told me what it wanted to be.
