German rocket scientist (1912–1977) who emigrated to the United States following World War II and assumed an instrumental role in the development of the American space program. Two items: TLS, signed “Wernher von Braun,” one page, 8 x 10.5, stamp-dated June 13, 1959, on Army Ballistic Missile Agency letterhead. Von Braun responds to an autograph request. In part: “Inclosed [sic] is an 8 x 10 signed photograph which I hope is satisfactory. I am honored and flattered to be able to comply with your request. Also inclosed [sic] are some fact sheets describing rockets, some articles on rocketry which I believe will be informative to you and some photographs of missiles. Your interest in the work of this Agency is appreciated.”; and a glossy 7.75 x 10.25 photo, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To P. den Otter, sincerely—Wernher von Braun.” Some light bends, creases, tiny indentations, and trimming to photo, and light wrinkling, staining at the tips, and five filing punch holes at the left side of the letter, otherwise fine condition. Two fabulous mementos from the very start of the American space program.
