Presented here is the actual Savage 32 automatic pistol used by Buffalo Bill in his Wild West Show performances, serial number 33177, ornate scrolling, pearl grips. Inscribed on the backstrap, ôCol W F Cody.ö It is in excellent condition!!! Comes with a copy of a April 9, 2002 letter from John T Callahan, Arms Historian, Savage Arms Corporation letterhead, Westfield, Massachusetts. Reads, ô...Thank you for your letter requesting information about your Savage semi-automatic pistol. During this past week, while at the Savage factory, I was able to search and locate in their records, information specific to your pistol with S/N 33177. Their records tell us that this pistol was produced as a Model 1907 in caliber .32 ACP. It was accepted from the factory to the warehouse at the Savage, Utica, New York plant on June 12, 1911. The original consignee is listed to be the famous Col. William F. Cody. Additional entries confirm that this gun was produced as a æSpecial GradeÆ, indicating it was factory engraved. Engraving during this era was executed by Savage engraver Enoch Tue...The design of this pistol is attributed to E.H. Searle, who was previously an ordnance officer at Springfield Armory in Springfield, MA...I have enclosed for your use a copy of the serial entry [present] as it exists at the Savage Arms factory...ö Also comes with the mentioned ôcopy of the serial entryö from Savage Arms mentioned in the letter. Showing that this pistol was ôSpec Gradeö, accepted ôJune 12, 1911ö, shipped ô8/22/11ö, and was sold to ôCol. W.F. Cody.ö Further comes with a copy of an article about Buffalo Bill and this pistol; including the advertisment ôBuffalo Bill Converted...The New SAVAGE Automaticö, showing this very pistol. Reads in part, ôFor Cody his last performances were as part of the 1914 and 1915 seasons of the Sells-Floto Circus and Buffalo BillÆs Wild West, and then in the æBuffalo Bill (Himself) and 101 Ranch Wild West. Combined with the Military Pegeant PreparednessÆ...The role of the gun in the West was a theme which played in the outdoor arenas throughout America and Europe...An arsenal of guns and blank (and often live) ammunition accompanied the troupes. It was marksmanship which gave stardom to the premier female performer of all these shows, Annie Oakley. And it was marksmanship which was a primary focus of the image of the preeminent male superstar, Buffalo Bill...Buffalo Bill announced switch to automatics...Savage .32 bore number 33177, and Col.
