c1860 - Adams Express Company Notes :
Lot of three items: 1) Promissory note from Adams Express Company, Express Forwarders. The sum of $1859.70 was collected in Memphis, Tenn. on May 3, 1862, due one year from date with interest. It was received from Wells Fargo & Co., datelined New York, Oct. 27, 1863. "Office 59 Broadway." is printed vertically along left border. Printed by "NESBITT & CO., PRINTERS." Brown print on white paper, measuring 8" x 5 1/2". While the typical liability information for Adams Express Company is printed across the bottom of the note, printed vertically in black across the entire width of the note is the statement "It is further agreed, that said company shall not, in any event, be liable for any loss, damage or detention caused by Civil or Military authority, or by rebellion, insurrection, or riot." A necessary statement considering this transaction moved from Tennessee (a Confederate State as of May, 1861) to New York (a Union State) during 1862-63, which falls near the midpoint of the Civil War (1861-1865). One horizontal foldline, otherwise very fine. 2) Promissory note from Adams Express Company, Express Forwarders. The sum of $25 received from Patrick Shea, datelined New Orleans, Oct. 29, 1864. It was addressed to Mrs. M Shea in Manchester, NH. Signed by M. Grigsby "for the Company." Louisiana seceded from the Union in 1860, and was captured by the Union in April-May 1862. So, while this is also a North-South directed note between New Orleans and Manchester, by this time they were both under Union control. One horizontal foldline, otherwise very fine. 3) Adams & C0's Express promissory note. "Received of Fisher Cashing Henderson." The rest of the note, including the date, remains blank. It is dateline New York, 185_. The vignette, covering much of the left hand side of the note, has "Adams & Co's Express" written along the top, with a city scene and banking building below. The offices named are Boston, New York, Phila., Baltimore, Washington & Wheeling, with the addresses listed below. Very fine, with no foldlines, tears, or spots.
