Seutter’s Map of the Americas with California as an Island
c. 1730 Colonial Era, Historic Hand-Colored Map titled, “NOVUS ORBIS SIVE AMERICA MERIDIONALIS ET SEPTENTRIONALIS...” by Matthew Seutter, Augsburg, Choice Extremely Fine.
A strikingly beautiful original Map of North and South America. This extremely colorful and impressive historic Hand-Colored Map measures 24.5” x 22” and is nicely matted to an overall size of 28” x 25.25”. It displays two large uncolored Pictorial Cartouches. The title Cartouche at the lower left features Native American Indians engaged in several peaceful activities, and a few birds. The Cartouche at upper left depicts the Spanish being served by several local Natives, with various religious themes and objects, such as a large Cross present. California is nicely depicted a large Island, located off the West coast of North America. McGlaughlin describes this Map as having, “California as an Island based on the second Sanson model; also of Homann style, and with many coastal place names. Terra Esonis incogn and FRETUM ANIAN to northwest. Pays de Moozemleck to northeast.” Some slight tone and an expertly sealed tear is well hidden at upper left mostly within the blank ocean of this desirable Map. Our last example offered in our June 10, 2006 EAHA Auction, Lot 755 sold for $1,770. A wonderful Map for framing and display.
