Watercolor and ink on paper roll, featuring rooster and bamboo, signed and attr. Yang Shanshen (Chinese, 1913-2004), inscribed with 1 artist seal, 160 x 35 cm. Yang Shanshen was a Chinese artist known for his flower-and-bird paintings. His use of atmospheric blurs set off by graphic lines, are hallmark elements of his work. Born in 1913 in Chiqi, China, he was influenced by Gao Jianfu and Gao Qifeng as a youth. In 1936, Yang traveled to Japan, where he attended the Domoto Art Institute in Kyoto and studied under Insho Domoto. In 1970, he received an honorary degree from the Chinese Academic Research Institute in Taiwan, and in 1981, the Hong Kong Museum of Art presented the solo exhibition “The Art of Yang Shanshen.” The artist died on May 15, 2004 in Hong Kong. Today, Yang’s works are held in the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art. PROVENANCE: Property of a gentleman (East Toronto, Canada)
