World War II Inland Div. T3 Carbine with Weaver J4 Telescope

This is an example of a low number (SN 00005) WWII production, Inland "T3" Carbine, that is complete with the mounting bar on top of the receiver that is fitted with an early Weaver J4 telescope. The T3 carbines, were manufactured in mid to late 1944 and were designed to be used with the early M2 and later M3 Infrared sniper scopes. It is estimated that approximately "1000" ever produced by the Inland Div. of General Motors, specifically in their own serial number range. After WWII 99.9% of all these "T3" carbines were demilitarized by the U.S. Government by torch cutting through the receiver, however this example appears quite possibly uncut. The primary difference between a T3 carbine and the standard M1 carbine, is that the T3 carbines were not machined for the standard rear sight. Instead had a one- piece, integral scope base brazed/pinned on top of the receiver. This different configuration was probably the primary reason the T3 carbine was demilitarization after WWII because it was completely replaced by using the newly developed "M3" Infrared Sniper scope with a conversion package. This package had a separate mounting bar that could convert the standard M1 Carbine for use with the M3 infrared scope and then back to its original configuration. The markings of the T3 carbine were moved receiver ring to the right rear side of the receiver. It is marked on the right side of the receiver "U.S. CARBINE/CAL. 30 T3", with the rear receiver marked "INLAND DIV/00005". The barrel is marked with only "INLAND MFG. DIV./GENERAL MOTORS", with no date. This early carbine is interestingly marked with an electric pencil on the side of the receiver, operating slide, trigger housing and underside of the barrel with "H 152-238-866-172". The barrel, operating slide and trigger housing are also numbered "00005". It retains its original and correct, brazed and pinned on mounting bar that is fitted with a early commercial Weaver J4 hunting scope. The scope is mounted with blue commercial rings and the markings are on the rear of the scope under the rear ring. It has the standard cross-hair reticle. The carbine itself has mostly Inland marked parts except the trigger housing which is a Quality Hardware (Q-NL) marked part. It has the "JI" marked type three barrel band, a flat," IO" marked blued bolt, with some internal Inland marked parts. It is fitted with a late WWII/early Korean war unmarked M2 stock and a unmarked two rivet handguard. It is complete with one 30rd carbine and a WWII, two-pocket canvas magazine case with one blued 5 round magazine.

Manufacture: Inland
Model: T3
BBL: 18 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30 M1 Carbine
Finish: parkerized
Grips:
Serial Number: 00005

Very fine as professionally restored with 90% of a heavily sand blasted, dark gray parkerized type finish overall, that shows wear on the edges and high spots with finish loss on the right receiver rail. Stock is a good replacement with a crack on right side. The scope retains 98% of the blued finish with clear sharp optics. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition with minor handling marks overall. A very interesting representative example of a T3 Carbine.
