Winchester Model 1873 .22 Lever Action Rifle
This Winchester Model 1873 .22 rimfire rifle was manufactured in 1893. The rifle has the distinctive .22 rimfire receiver with no loading gate and front-loading magazine tube. The octagon barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver have a blue finish. The hammer, loading lever, and crescent steel buttplate have a casehardened finish. The buttplate does not have a trap. The walnut stock and forearm have a varnished finish. The barrel is fitted with the standard dovetail front sight with nickel-silver blade and sporting type rear sight. The receiver has an integral dust cover rib and dust cover with seriated edges. The rifle has the second style cartridge stop on the magazine tube and the bolt has a spring steel extractor. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866.OCTOBER 16.1860-" ahead of the rear sight. "22 SHORT" is stamped on the top of the barrel in front of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "{MODEL 1873}" with foliate lettering. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is engraved: "22 CAL/SHORT" in two lines. The serial number, "469201B" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. The M1873 .22 Rimfire Rifle was the first repeating rifle manufactured in America chambered for the .22 caliber cartridge. Winchester manufactured 19,552 of these rifles between 1884 and 1904. Surviving examples in good condition are scarce.

Fair. The rifle has a brown patina on the barrel, magazine tube, receiver and loading lever. The hammer retains most of the original casehardened finish and the rear sight has most of the blue finish. The buttplate has a silver-gray patina. There are several shallow dents on the left side of the receiver in front of the side plate. The sides of the barrel have some small dents and the magazine has some scattered pitting. The forearm shows moderate-heavy finish wear and is in good condition. The undersized stock is sanded and refinished. The markings on the barrel and receiver tang are sharp; the cartridge elevator markings are legible. This is an example of a scarce Winchester Model 1873 .22 Rimfire Rifle.
