Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine
This solid example of a Winchester Third Model 1866 Carbine was manufactured in 1873. The carbine has a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver, brass buttplate with sliding trap, first style carbine folding leaf sight, barrel band with integral front sight and threaded magazine cap. The butt trap contains a three-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The barrel, magazines and barrel bands are blued. The hammer and loading lever have a casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866.OCTOBER 15.1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "119440" is stamped on the lower receiver tang immediately behind the trigger. The inspection mark: "LS" is stamped behind the serial number. A small "&" is stamped between the tang screw and the loading lever latch.
BBL: 20 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 RF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 119440
Condition: Very good plus. The barrel, magazine tube and barrel bands have a deep, smooth, plum-brown patina with traces of the original blue finish in protected areas. The hammer and loading lever have a mottled, blue gray patina. Traces of the niter blue finish are present on the loading gate. The brass receiver and buttplate are un-polished and have a mellow patina. The side plate joints are tight and free from battering. Receiver wear is limited to some scattered, minor, nicks and scratches. The buttplate shows only scattered minor wear and has a slightly darker patina than the receiver. The barrel markings are light but completely legible. The serial number and markings on the lower receiver tang are crisp. The stock and forearm show light-moderate handling wear but remain in very good overall condition. This is an outstanding example of a Third Model 1873 Carbine; examples in this clean, unaltered, condition are very difficult to find.
