<B>Walt Whitman Carte-de-Visite Photograph Signed</B></I> "<I>Walt Whitman</B></I>," 2.5" x 3.75", upper edge trimmed. Rare signed carte-de-visite of the great 19th century American poet. The photographer is unknown but the photograph's style of light and shadow is reminiscent of William Kurtz who opened his New York City studio in 1865. With a Mathew Brady carte-de-visite photograph of <B>John Pierpont</B></I> signed "<I>John Pierpont, poet</B></I>" beneath the image, displayed in a 5" x 6.25" ornately gilt-bordered card. The opening displaying the photograph is 2" x 3.25" with a curved top. Pierpont (1785-1866) is best known for <I>Airs of Palestine: A Poem</B></I> (1816). Also, an unsigned carte-de-visite of <B>Barbara Frietchie</B></I>, 2.5" x 4", captioned at the lower edge "<I>Photographed by Brady & Co., 352 Penna. Ave., Washington,/for the Great National Fair</B></I>." The first four lines of John Greenleaf Whittier's 1864 poem "Barbara Frietchie" are printed under the image and the remaining 56 lines are printed on verso.
