This ceramic glazed decorative item seems to be planter. The subject is a gondola-like boat with high sides floating on waves. Three men dressed in a traditional costume, one kneeling and two standing are looking in different directions as they man the boat. The open container that seems to be a place for a plant is small - measures 1.5" x 1.5" at its widest parts and has a depth of 1.375".

The glaze is translucent in areas along facial features, parts of the clothing and edges of the waves. There glaze colors drip in different areas on the piece. The colors are bright and include rose, teal, blue/indigo, aqua, and orange. The base is unglazed and has a light orange tint to it - could be terra cotta or earthenware. Based on the impressed 'Made in Japan' mark on the bottom this piece can be dated to post World War II.

Condition: The entire piece is covered in crazing and the crackles are more severe along the edge of the base; there is a chip that seems to be glued into place along the right front base edge - the area measures 4 mm x 4 mm; there is a 5mm x 2mm chip on the rear top edge of the boat (visible in photo); there is a manufacturing pin hole on the side that would be the back end of the boat; the piece could stand to be cleaned up. Additional photos are available upon request.
