Very Fine Burnside Civil War Saddle Ring Carbine
This is a nice example of a Fifth model Burnside carbine that was manufactured somewhere between 1863 and 1865. The 5th Model differs in that it has a guide screw in the center of the right side frame allowing smoother operation as the breech rides in a corresponding groove in the breechblock. The barrel was blued and fitted with a pinched blade front sight and two-leaf, folding rear sight graduated to 500 yards. The buttplate, receiver, hammer lever and barrel band have a casehardened finish. The barrel tang, trigger guard, and breechblock had a high polish niter finish. The forend and stock are black walnut. The top of the breech is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864" over the serial number. The matching serial number is marked on the top of the breechblock. The top of the barrel is marked "CAST STEEL 1864: ahead of the rear sight and "W" at the breech. The lock is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co / PROVIDENCE RI.". There is a small single letter inspectors mark on most parts. There is a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side of the receiver. There is a clear "RKW" boxed script cartouche on the left stock wrist.
BBL: 21 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 54 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 16199
Condition: Very fine. The barrel has a smooth brown patina with half of the original thin blue finish in protected areas around the rear sight. 90% plus of the original bright blue finish remains on the breechblock, lever and upper tang with some thinning on the lever and signs of some cleaning on the breechblock. The lock has been polished and is a smooth gray. The frame and buttplate retain 70% of the original case colors, while the hammer shows traces of original case colors mixed with smooth brown patina. The wood is very fine with exception of a small gouge on the right side of the wrist and overall some minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
