Venetian Schiavona Basket Hilt Sword with Sheath
Originating with the Eastern European mercenaries employed by the Most Serene Republic of Venice as bodyguards for the Doge, the Schiavona pattern sword became popular with Venice's trading partners as a military and heavy cavalry blade. Double edged blade measuring 34 1/2" long, with a short single fuller on each side marked "INTI DOMNNI" and capped with an engraved animal design. Fitted with a very intricate basket hilt, showing an asymmetrical design which flares out from the front quillion, reaches down to the pommel and reconverges on the rear quillion, which has a short projection beyond the basket, turned 90 degrees to the right. Oval grip, with an interwoven wire wrap, and a "cat's head" pommel disc with floral patterns on each side. With a leather wrapped and metal banded wood sheath.

Condition: Very fine, with minimal pitting and a few small dings on the blade. A small area of brown patina is visible near the base of the blade, which shows a mixed gray overall. The guard is a darker brown patina, with a small crack on either side near the blade fullers, grip wrap is tight, and the pommel shows a small section absent near the front. Sheath is fair, with separation of the leather at the edges, a small amount of missing material, and a tape repair near the top. The guard is slightly loose, with the blade straight and the grip and pommel tightly fitted.
