This is an interesting Colt Lighting medium frame rifle with unique, yet to be explained history. The factory letter states that the rifle was shipped to "Dr. A.J. Woodcock" on October 15, 1901. The rifle has the high polish Colt commercial blue finish with color casehardened hammer. The stock and forearm are varnished black walnut. A saddle ring is mounted on a staple on the left side of the receiver. The rifle has a special order, half-octagon/half-round barrel and half magazine. The barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted, Lyman, folding, globe combination front sight and a Lyman Partridge No. 6, folding, two-leaf rear sight with white triangle on the lower leaf. A Lyman folding combination peep sight is mounted on the lower tang. The left side of the receiver is inscribed: "Camp Riverside". (Writer had a large frame deluxe express rifle with the same inscription many years ago!) The factory letter describes the barrel as "24 inch, Round configuration" and lists as "Special Features" the half magazine, carbine buttplate, a Lyman folding peep sight, a Lyman Partridge leaf sight No. 6, and a Lyman combination front sight". The letter does not reference the frame inscription, saddle ring, or the half octagon barrel. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT.F.A. MFG.CO.HARTFORD.CT.U.S.A." above the 1883-1887 patent dates ahead of the rear sight. "44 Cal." is roll-stamped in bold letters on the top of the barrel ahead of the receiver. The serial number "89033" is roll-stamped on the lower receiver tang. Colt Lightning rifles are rarely found with special order features. A Colt Lightning rifle with special order barrel, magazine, butt, sights and inscription is a unique rifle.
BBL: 24 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 CLMR
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 89033
Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 85% plus of the original Colt blue finish. There are some minor scuff marks on the round portion of the barrel and some edge wear on the octagon portion of the barrel. There is some minor handling wear on the top of the receiver and bolt and on the forward edge of the trigger guard. The left side of the receiver has contact wear from the sling ring. The blue finish on the buttplate has the some finish loss on the toe and heel. The forearm is in very good condition with about half of the varnish finish and the checkering shows handling wear. The stock is in very fine condition and retains most of the varnish finish; wear is limited to some very minor storage marks on the left side of the stock. This is an example of a very rare inscribed medium frame Colt Lightning rifle with special order barrel, magazine, butt and sights.
