Striking & Colorful Cyrus Durand Vignette Sample Array
Unique Vignette Sample Display Sheet, formerly from the Cyrus Durand Archive Book, Plate 51, Portrait, Dies, Grillwork and Multi-Color Counters, Choice Crisp Extremely Fine.
This Durand Vignette Display Sheet has a plate arrangement with the patterns being quite intricate. The elements in this case are affixed to the 10” x 10.25” heavy wove paper page, with slight ghosting to the blank verso of the prior Plate 50. Though the deep carmine red color is brief, it is very striking in the balance and makes a major contribution to the overall sheet display production. There are Fifteen elements, (13) printed in black and three in deep carmine. An engraved handsome Male Portrait is affixed at the center of wide piece of grillwork, with repeating micro-lettered THREE pattern, measuring 90mm by 42mm. Flanking on both sides are two black cycloidals with colorful rich carmine counters, affixed at center having "X" left and "10" right. Above central, spoked cycloidal with another bold carmine piece being set in its middle, and three smaller black pieces around.

At bottom, an incredibly intricate and very large "N" with a micro-lettered ONE pattern. Flanking, are two smaller black cycloidals. At the extreme bottom is a wide piece of grillwork with repeating micro-lettered ONE pattern, that is incredibly fine lined. An intricate and desirable multicolor plate. The lathe work is amazing on this example. The placement on the page guard may or may not have been an accident since it seems to fit the center of the book position well. There is some glue wrinkling and faint ghosting seen from the next Plate 52. This plate related to the five full Proof Banknotes in the Durand Archive Book. There were relatively few color plates in the book, making them more rare and all the more important.
