Manufactured in the 1860s. The upper tang has the two line 1863 and 1864 patent dates. Two leaf rear sight, sling swivel on single barrel band and buttstock, saddle bar with ring on left side of receiver, and "US" marked buttplate. The left side of the buttstock is stamped with the number "52". Although the U.S. government purchased nearly 15,000 Type II carbines, most were promptly sold to France for use in the Franco-Prussian War.
