U.S. Model 1840 Enlisted Cavalry Saber, by Ames, this example dated 1848, putting it at the time of the Mexican War and correct for use by either Union or Confederate forces. Blade measures 36''; 41-1/2'' overall. This pattern sword was in basic use for 75 years and was nicknamed ''The Old Wristbreaker''. Pommel with Phrygian helmet pommel, with half-basket two-branch knuckleguard bow. Inspector marked ''WD''. Condition is fine. Wire wrap is present. Leather handle with light nicks. Blade with minor carbon spotting, more pronounced to scabbard. Est.: $800-$1,200.
