U.S. Model 1847 Sword Bayonet with Scabbard for Sappers & Miners Musketoon, with cast brass hilt and handle with eagle feather design, socket and locking ring, by Ames Mfg. Co., mfg'd 1855, 27'' overall with blade length of 22'', ricasso is marked ''U.S./ADK/1855''; reverse is marked ''Ames Mfg./Chicopee, Mass.''. Pommel is lightly marked ''ADK/RHKW'' (Andrew D. King/Robert Henry Kirkwood Whitely). The first 200 Sappers & Miners saber bayonets were completed by Feb. 7, 1847, and Ames requested that the blade fullers be removed from the design in future orders. Later in that year an additional 250 were delivered without the fullers. It is estimated that only approx. 500 bayonets were produced in this configuration in 1855, with an additional 33 being mfg'd in 1856. Few have been noted. Condition is excellent with clear markings, minor carbon spotting to blade, light patina to bronze handle, with correct and original large felt washer remaining to blade side of guard!
. Original scabbard shows light patina at both throat and chape. Leather with minor crazing, very strong stitching, with all eight rivets in place. Scabbard finial tip has gone missing but is common to many period scabbards (easily repaired or left alone, as detracts little from this scarce and original pre-Civil War ensemble). Est.: $3,500-$5,000.
