Rare and Extremely Desirable U.S. Model 1834 Eagle Cartridge Box, by James Boyd, of black leather construction, with original buff leather strap, and 26-hole wooden cartridge block atop three-compartment tin tray, measuring 10'' across, 6-1/2'' to center point of flap, 2-1/2'' deep. Front flap is border decorated in vine/acorn/leaf motifs; center of flap with oval measuring 5-1/2''x3'' with Federal eagle clasping arrows and laurel branch, surmounted by the letters ''US''; above is embossed the U.S. motto ''E Pluribus Unum'' in a scroll type banner. The regulations for the Government of the Ordnance Dept. 1834 describes the Infantry cartridge box exactly as given in the 1835 Army Regulation. Originally purchased from the Arthur Jackson collection by Ray Houser in the 1960s. Arthur Jackson was from an extremely wealthy family and spent all of his time and lots of his fortune hunting down U.S. military arms and artifacts. As his collection went to auction upon his death!
, L.A. arms dealer Ray Houser was able to talk the family out of auctioning the accoutrements, many being sold to him outright. These boxes were used during the Mexican War and are correct for many flint and early percussion U.S. longarms. Condition is excellent showing light general crazing to finish, light wear at edge of folds, and clear mfg.'s stamp (''Made by James Boyd''). Box appears unused with no evidence of ammo being inside. Buff cross sling shows just moderate soiling and very little wear at it loops thru the iron buckles at base of cartridge box. Interior tarred cloth cartridge cover shows only light checking to edges. A beautiful early cartridge box that would enhance the most advanced pre-Civil War military collection. Est.: $8,000-$12,000.
