First government rifle made in the U.S. It is a .54 and appears to be of musket bore, but actually has very fine rifling. In very fine condition. Lockplate is stamped "Harpers Ferry 1818", the date of manufacture, and also has a stamped U.S. Eagle. The rifle has very classic lines of a flintlock based on a Kentucky rifle of the period, and has all brass hardware and patch box. It was the same type carried by the rifle regiments during the War of 1812. This kind of weapon was also carried on the Lewis and Clark Expedition west in exploration of the Northwest Territory. This is also one of the weapons that would have been carried by rifle volunteers during the Texas Revolution and the Battle of the Alamo. Antique.
