(20th Century-Fox, 1966) Collection of (4) original pencil and watercolor on 10 x 15” illustration board costume sketches of Asian character types for The Sand Pebbles, executed and initialed by Theodora Van Runkle for Dorothy Jeakins and Boris Leven. Van Runkle would not achieve her own fame as costume designer until a few years later with the critically acclaimed Bonnie and Clyde, which established a nationwide fashion trend all its own. The sketch here labeled “#119 Rikisha Coolie” also has a fully sketched, uncolored male figure on verso, presumably by Van Runkle as well. Very Fine throughout.
