The Ten Commandments (1956) - Tablets
The Ten Commandments (1956) - Possibly one of the most iconic props in film history are the tablets carried by Charlton Heston in Cecil B. DeMille's epic film. There were multiple original sets of tablets made for the film, which had various finishes for certain types of lighting conditions. Over the years many of these tablets have surfaced and come to auction, all having slight differences. The documentation from this pair comes from the original owner and states that he bought the tablets from the Sands Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, which was well known for displaying and owning a vast collection of movie props. While purchasing many items during a wholesale sell-out of their collection, the owner befriended the warehouse manager who led him to a box containing these tablets. This pair of tablets is remarkably similar to another pair also attributed to the Sands Casino and that pair had holes drilled in the back for mounting. These two sets have a very unique faux granite paint, almost impossible to duplicate, which matches perfectly. As multiple sets were made, it is highly possible that the casino ended up with several pair as they had a large collection of items from the film. Cecil B. DeMille also had various props replicated by the original prop makers for display at theaters across the country. It is possible that some of the pairs currently in existence are those. This pair is vintage in make up and materials, but to this day all tablets become extremely hard to authenticate exactly where they came from and what they were used for. Made from wood covered in resin and painted to look like red granite with Aramaic letters carved in. 12" x 23" x 1.5" each. This item is oversized and will require additional shipping costs.
