United States Government. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, COMMUNICATING THE REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE MINT, SHOWING THE OPERATIONS OF THE MINT AND BRANCH MINTS FOR THE YEAR 1847. (Washington), Jan. 31, 1848. 8vo, self-covered. 5, (3) pages. Removed from previous binding. Near fine. Transmitted to Congress via President Polk by Mint Director R.M. Patterson, this report boasts that “it will be seen that the coinage of 1847 is nearly double, in value, of that of any former year, and that the proportion of gold to silver has greatly increased.” It gives full information on the three Southern Mints, and also important data on deposits. “Of the deposites,” it notes, “a large portion was made under the act of February 9, 1793, which requires that all foreign gold and silver coins, (except Spanish milled dollars, and parts of such dollars,) which shall be received for moneys due to the United States, shall, previously to their being issued in circulation, be coined anew.” Rare: the first copy we have offered in many years.
