Rare ALS in ink and pencil, signed "Stuart F. V. Sutcliffe," six total pages, 8 x 10, no date but circa 1959. Lengthy letter addressed to his former girlfriend Sheila Garbe, in part: "It occurs to me that you will wonder why I am writing-that is if you ever open the letter. Well I [am] writing for no other reason than that I would like to write to you from time to time, providing of course you don't mind, I would even like you to me, telling me how you are getting on, the kind of things you are doing for example...You will remember me telling you about some commissions for portraits that have materialized, well I am doing one at the moment of a young girl who lives in Childwall...I am getting £20 for this, and at least another commissions immediately after this...Another thing is that I am getting either a small car or a motor bike in about three weeks. The only reason I might get another bike instead of a car is that it takes so long to learn to drive and get a license, also every friend you have immediately thinks that you are some kind of unpaid taxi...I have finished that portrait of yours and framed it. I think the likeness is very good. In fact I was amazed at the way it came so easily and quickly and everyone who has seen say it is like you." In fine condition, with central intersecting folds, paperclip holes to top left edge and scattered creasing. On the constant urging of roommate and Liverpool College of Art classmate John Lennon, Stuart Sutcliffe joined The Quarrymen in late January 1960, purchasing a bass guitar with money he earned from selling one of his paintings. Along with Lennon, Sutcliffe is credited with creating the band name 'Beetles,' an ode to Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Pre-certified REAL.
