U.S. Cavalry Saber, by Starr, contract of 1812-1813, marked ''P/HHP/N.Starr'' to right side of ricasso, 39'' overall with 34'' blade, delivered in time for actual use during the War of 1812. ''HHP'' stands for then inspector Henry H. Perkin; knuckleguard is also stamped ''P''. Handle is leather-covered wood. Scabbard is 35'' long with two-ring hanger, japanned black finish, with abbreviated drag. Condition is about very good with moderate carbon staining to blade. Grip retains approx. 65% lightly flaking crazed black leather. Iron knuckleguard has toned dark. Original leather washer shows only slight losses at upper edge. Scabbard has mostly toned dark but some original finish remains. A great early sword with nice markings. Est.: $800-$1,250.
