Manufactured in 1901. This is an example of a special order 1895 with light weight 22 inch barrel. Not to be confused with the carbine, which also has the 22 inch barrel, the short rifle is absent of the military style handguard and saddle ring normally found on the carbines. Standard nickel steel marking on the left rear of the barrel, "30 U.S." at the breech, two line address/patent marking on the left side of the receiver and the serial number on the lower tang. The top of the receiver and barrel at the breech is marked with the Winchester oval proof. Blade front sight with ivory bead and adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sporting sight. Mounted with a smooth forearm with Schnabel forend and ebony insert and straight factory oil finish grip stock with black checkered hard rubber Winchester shotgun style buttplate. The copy of a Cody Firearms Museum records sheet verifies serial number 31429 as a rifle, 30 caliber, 22 inch extra light round barrel, dark stock, Lyman hunting front sight, rear unreadable, shotgun butt with rubber buttplate, oil finish, shipped July 30, 1901 and returned and repaired on three dates.

The receiver, magazine and lever retain 95% original blue finish with high edge wear, a few areas of silver gray patina and some minor pitting on the upper right edge and right front of the receiver. There are also a number of scratches present on the receiver. The wood is also very fine with a small minor gouge on the left side of the stock and overall some scattered minor dings and scratches. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
